At the Smile Centre, rather than taking teeth out we prefer to work with our patients to find possible alternatives. However, sometimes the tooth is too badly damaged by tooth decay, trauma or infection, so an extraction is required. After good local anaesthesia, the tooth is gently eased from the socket. You'll receive written instructions for post operative care and we find that generally, bone and gums heal very well.
Sometimes, with more complicated extractions, the gum and bone have to be cut to allow more space for the tooth or roots to be removed. Both dentists at the Smile Centre are well experienced in these techniques.
Before extractions, we like to discuss the options for dealing with the resulting gap, which could be dentures, a bridge or implants. Occasionally, good teeth are removed for orthodontic reasons to make space for others.
