Crowns on back teeth are often made from gold or palladium alloy and are usually used to strengthen teeth that have been weakened by large fillings. They can be covered in porcelain to provide a tooth coloured appearance. Crowns on front teeth are mainly carried out for appearance so often have a tooth-coloured porcelain.
